Governing America: An Introduction

چکیده
in the spring of 1995, i attended a session at the organization of American Historians conference at the Washington Hilton, which focused on the state of political history. When i walked toward the conference room i expected to find a small crowd, and one with little hope for the future. At the time, the political history field seemed bleak. senior practitioners, who, for at least two decades, felt that their work had been relegated to the academic dustbin, were demoralized and pessimistic. Graduate students such as myself entered the profession with a sense of trepidation, concerned about how our interests would be received in the academy. When i entered the meeting room, i was surprised. The panelists spoke to an overflow crowd. The room was filled to capacity. Attendees were standing along the walls, and even outside the door in the hallway peering in. During the discussion, a generational debate opened up. While some of the older panelists and attendees expressed the predictable laments about the demise of the field since the 1960s, younger voices insisted that in fact we were on the cusp of a new era. They pointed to new scholarship that was starting to reenvision how historians wrote about politics by bringing back issues such as public policy and government institutions while integrating these subjects into broader narratives that dealt with social and cultural forces. it was clear to everyone in the room that something was happening. The electric atmosphere suggested that change might be taking place after decades when U.s. political history had suffered professionally. As it turned out, the younger generation was right. The problems for political history had begun toward the end of the 1960s, when a new generation of scholars entering the profession developed a stinging critique of political history as it had been practiced by legendary figures such as Arthur schlesinger Jr. and richard Hofstadter. shaped by the conflicts of the 1960s over civil rights and vietnam, the scholarly arm of the new Left had argued that political history, as it had been practiced

Personal Mastery and All-Cause Mortality among Older Americans Living with Diabetes
Introduction: Higher personal mastery is associated with better physical functioning, wellbeing, and longevity among older populations. However, few studies have focused on whether personal mastery is protective against mortality among older adults living with diabetes over time. Methods: A total of 1,779 participants were identified from an off-year survey of the Health and Retirement Study....

Background: The characteristic clinical presentation of glomus tumors and the low negative predictive value of themagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) raise the question whether MRI improves their management. Therefore, this studyaimed to investigate whether MRI improved the management of glomus tumors. Methods: In total, 87 patients with a histologically confirmed glomus tumor wer...
متن کاملMicroscopic identification of the order parameter governing liquid-liquid transition in a molecular liquid.
A liquid-liquid transition (LLT) in a single-component substance is an unconventional phase transition from one liquid to another. LLT has recently attracted considerable attention because of its fundamental importance in our understanding of the liquid state. To access the order parameter governing LLT from a microscopic viewpoint, here we follow the structural evolution during the LLT of an o...
متن کاملDiscovering governing equations from data by sparse identification of nonlinear dynamical systems.
Extracting governing equations from data is a central challenge in many diverse areas of science and engineering. Data are abundant whereas models often remain elusive, as in climate science, neuroscience, ecology, finance, and epidemiology, to name only a few examples. In this work, we combine sparsity-promoting techniques and machine learning with nonlinear dynamical systems to discover gover...
متن کاملHow to Redefine Kamal-ol-Molk in Honar-va-Mardom Magazine of the 40s and 50s and its Relationship with the Modernization Process of Iran
The influence of Kamal-ol-Molk on Iranian contemporary art is taken for granted. This effect was the beginning of changing the paradigms governing Persian painting. But despite the influential position of Kamal-ol-Molk, the discussion about this influence and position has not always been the same, and perhaps it can be said that few artists in contemporary Iranian art have experienced such a di...
متن کاملEthnobotany and biodiversity conservation-holistic approaches from Eastern Africa and Latin America
Scientists widely agree that species extinction has heavily accelerated in the last decades. A grave problem for the conservation of diversity is the still very fragmentary knowledge of the ecology of most species. Attempts of sustainable management and conservation must integrate local communities and their traditional knowledge. Management decisions need to include the high importance of natu...
